IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta are two of the most prestigious educational institutions in India. Both have rigorous entry criteria and select close to 300 MBA (more accurately, PGDM) students out of around 150,000 applicants every year.
IIM-C was established in November 1961, in collaboration with the MIT Sloan School of Management, the government of West Bengal, the Ford Foundation and Indian industry. During its initial years, several prominent faculty formed part of its nucleus, including Paul Samuelson, Jagdish Sheth and J. K. Sengupta.
IIM-A was also established in 1961 by the Government of India in collaboration with the Government of Gujarat and Indian Industry. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, a noted scientist and industrialist and other Ahmedabad based industrialists such as Kasturbhai Lalbhai played a major role in the creation of the Institute.
The highligh of the 100 acre IIM-A campus is the the baked brick style buildings designed by the famous architect Louis Kahn. The highlight of IIM-C's 135 acre campus are the 7 lakes and a mini replica of the Howrah bridge.
Other architectural highlights at the IIM-C campus include the spaceship-like MCHV building and a new grand auditorium.
IIM-A has 25 dorms, each of which can hold 25-44 students in single-person rooms. 7 of the 25 dorms are in a new campus across the street from the old campus.
In contrast to the plethora of dorms that IIM-A has, IIM-C has only 3 large hostels, one of which is co-ed. A fourth hostel is called the "Family Hostel" that accomodates students with families (since the other hostels have single person rooms)
Both IIM-A and IIM-C have huge libraries that also offer online access to students. Both institutions also subscribe to the EBSCO online database.
IIM-A's library (called the Vikram Sarabhai library) was established in 1962. It now occupies an area of 20120 sq.ft. with a seating capacity for 210. The library has 1.6 lakh books, 37,400 bound volumes of periodicals, 1,970 working papers, 925 CDs and subscription for 640 journals.
IIM-C's library (called the B.C.Roy library) was also established in 1962. During its early years, the library received generous support from the Ford Foundation. One of the biggest Management libraries in Asia, the Library has a collection of more than 1.6 lakh volumes of books and bound serials, a rich collection of micro documents including working papers, pamphlets, reports and monographs. It subscribes to 500 Journals, and provides access to around 5,000 online full-text journals and 9 Financial, Economic and Statistical databases. Most of the functions and services of the IIM-C library are automated.
While both institutes offer their flagship 2-year PGDM course as well as a Fellowship Program, there are several other courses that the institutes offer.
Both institutes have a variety of extracurricular activities such as Dramatics, photography and sports. IIM-C also has an organization called InCA (Initiative for Community Action) that provides support to NGOs. They also have a series called Colloquia where notable figures from around the world are invited for talks.
Placements are a major topic of rivalry between the IIMs. Both IIM-A and IIM-C have placements that are comparable not only to each other, but also to Ivy League business schools in the US. Global investment banking and management consulting companies offer Associate positions to students from both institutes.
