Competitions The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association sponsors an annual championship, involving 4 regional playoffs and a final tournament. Many organized by the International Roller Sports Federation.

Game Play

Roller Derby involves a series of short matchups, or “jams,” in which a “jammer” – the scoring player – from each team attempts to gain points by lapping members of the other team.

Roller skating has no particular rules and can take forms including artistic roller skating, speed skating and group skating.

Origins

Roller derby was invented by Leo Seltzer and Damon Runyon in the 1930s. It developed out of banked-track roller skating marathons.

Competitions

The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association sponsors an annual championship, involving 4 regional playoffs and a final tournament.

There are many different national competitions for roller skating, including the Artistic Skating World Championships and the Inline Speed Skating World Championships.
