Joomla and WordPress are both open-source platforms for web sites. WordPress is more popular as a blog but several magazine or news/reporting journals have also adopted the platform. Joomla started out as a content management system but the developer community has created several plugins to add functionality such as social networking, discussion forums and groups.

WordPress has an advantage in the number of developers familiar with the platform, the number of skins, plugins and widgets available. It is a good choice for blogs and content-oriented websites while Joomla is a better choice for websites that need additional functionality.
