Joomla and WordPress are both open-source platforms for web sites. WordPress is more popular as a blog but several magazine or news/reporting journals have also adopted the platform. Joomla started out as a content management system but the developer community has created several plugins to add functionality such as social networking, discussion forums and groups.
WordPress has an advantage in the number of developers familiar with the platform, the number of skins, plugins and widgets available. It is a good choice for blogs and content-oriented websites while Joomla is a better choice for websites that need additional functionality.
Joomla is a free and open source content management system (CMS) for publishing content on the World Wide Web and intranets and a model–view–controller (MVC) Web application framework that can also be used independently.
WordPress is a free and open source blog publishing application and content management system. WordPress is the official successor of b2cafelog which was developed by Michel Valdrighi. It is distributed under the GNU GPL license.
